Waikanae Rail Link A Big Boost For Kapiti
An improved commuter train service for the Kapiti Coast is expected to be a big boost for the local economy and it could affect real estate values longer term. The train service is already well used although has been experiencing reliability problems of late. However, the improvements are substantial and KiwiRail are hoping to win back lost customers and attract many more to use the service.
The improvements include new trains, double tracking, and extending the service to Waikanae. Work is expected to begin on the new Waikanae station this month. When the service starts in 2011, it is expected to prove popular with commuters from Waikanae and further north who currently have to drive to Paraparaumu to catch a train.
