$90 Million Kapiti Rail Upgrade Approaching Completion
Kapiti Coast rail commuters have be putting up with a sometimes unreliable rail service from Paraparaumu to Wellington for some time. Schedules have been delayed, trains have broken down and heating in some carriages has been substandard. This is because the service and equipment has been in dire need of a a long overdue upgrade. Even road commuters on State Highway One south of Paraparaumu (along the Raumati Straights) have experience some delays. However, despite all that, the planned KiwiRail $90 million project to double track and electrify the railway line to Waikanae is nearly a completion date. It was hoped the project would be finished by late 2009, but the latest estimate is Wellington Anniversary weekend 2010.
Work is expected to start upgrading the Waikanae station on May 17 with a new car park on Pehi Kupa St being the first improvement.
The rail upgrade is expected to dramatically improve rail services on the Kapiti Coast – which can only help the local property market.
